Description: The legal intern will assist immigrant victims of violent crime with filing victim-based immigration petitions like U Visas and VAWAs. This program is dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. Duties include: working directly with clients to prepare statements and immigration forms, gathering documentation, providing translations, and doing legal research as needed. Interns will also participate in weekly intake sessions. Victim Justice Program Staff Attorney Annie Anderson will provide supervision and leadership for this internship.
The goals of this program are to develop an intern’s legal skills, serve as an introduction to the Victim Justice Program, and provide a deeper understanding of Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic’s prophetic call to “Seek justice, defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow” (Isaiah 1:17).
Qualifications: Law students (2L or 3L) or Undergrads fluent in Spanish with a passion that aligns with the Victim Justice Program’s mission to provide civil legal assistance to low-income victims of violent crime. Knowledge and fluency in Spanish. Applicants should feel comfortable working with clients who have suffered from violent crimes.
