Client Story: Justice When Wages are Wrongfully Taken

Jasmine Smith couldn’t believe her eyes. She worked hard and needed her full paycheck just to get by. Now she was being presented with a claim to garnish her wages for a debt that she allegedly owed.

Jasmine (not her real name) was very confused. She had never taken on this debt. It was all a horrible mistake.

Jasmine couldn’t afford to lose any money from her paycheck, yet she also couldn’t afford to hire a lawyer to fight this battle. Things seemed hopeless.

Thankfully Jasmine was referred to the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, where she learned that she would receive help, at no cost to her.

“We were very happy to see Ms. Smith receive the justice she deserves in this case,” stated staff attorney Detria Tate, with the Clinic’s Housing & Consumer Justice Program. “The creditor was ordered to take affirmative steps to clear our client of any association with the debt.”

Now that this nightmare is behind her, Jasmine can focus once again on working and providing for herself and her family.

We need your support to continue helping our low-income neighbors who are experiencing injustice.

Thank you for all that you do to help our mission! Help us reach more neighbors by giving to our #Spring4Justice fundraiser (https://justice.nclegalclinic.org/spring4justice23) and by sharing our social media posts.
