The deadline for filing a 2024 return with a valid extension is Wednesday, October 15, 2025. This did not extend the deadline to pay, only to file. There are several free options offered through the IRS Free File program, which can be found here. There are also fillable forms along with eight (8) tax software program providers with various adjusted gross income caps for the free filing software, ranging from $48,000 to $84,000, depending on the provider. As a side note, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is available during the actual filing season (with some limitations) to have returns prepared for free for taxpayers with adjusted gross income under $67,000.
